Sourcing for News in Digital Age

The primary source of news, whether online or offline for journalists is people. Anything that is new is news. People and events make news. News is about people and events. It is part of the natural human instinct to want to know what our neighbours are doing, what is happening to them. What people do and say make news depending on who those people are and what they say, why it was said, when, where and how it was said. These traditional 5w’s and H are the pedestal on which news rests.
Internet itself is an inexhaustible information store house but much of that information does not constitute news. They are not the sort of information that a paper or magazine, online or offline, will put on its front page, neither are they the sort of story that a radio or television station will broadcast. Most of the kind of information that is readily accessible on the internet are background materials for news stories.
So, whether online or offline, the traditional means and sources of getting news stories still remain relevant. Some of them include:
Interview: this is a way of getting stories by talking to people. By interviewing them; Who said what, when and where remains relevant.
Documents: such as White papers, commission’s reports and data.
Personal observations and investigations
Special project and facility tours
Press Release
Phone calls
E-mails
Blog
News Wires
Monitoring of other media organization
Social media and
Websites.
